The Purpose of Privilege

A Lesson from Queen Esther

In the tapestry of biblical narratives, Esther stands out as a compelling account of divine providence and the purpose behind the privilege bestowed upon her. Esther's story begins with a backdrop of adversity. As an orphan, she faced life's challenges without her parents' comforting presence. Her cousin Mordecai stepped in as a surrogate father figure, guiding and nurturing her. Through a series of events, Esther participated in a royal beauty contest to become the queen of Persia, where she captured the heart of King Xerxes, leading to her coronation. This elevation from her humble beginnings wasn't a stroke of luck but a divine orchestration, strategically positioning her for a purpose transcending personal comfort.
As Queen of Persia, Esther was vested with privilege and influence. However, it was not merely for her gratification. The purpose behind Esther's privileged position becomes evident when a grave threat looms over the Jewish people. Haman, an official in the Persian court, devises a wicked plan to annihilate the Jews. Esther's cousin, Mordecai, urges her to use her position and privilege for the greater good, even risking her life, as approaching the king uninvited can be punishable by death. “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:13-14, ESV).
Her response to Mordecai's plea showcases a profound understanding of her purpose and her readiness to sacrifice her comfort, position, and even her safety for the well-being of others. She declares, "…I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish" (Esther 4:16, ESV). Miraculously, the king extends his scepter, sparing her life and allowing her to present her case. Through a series of events orchestrated by God, the tables turn, and Haman's wicked plot is unveiled and foiled. Esther's courage and intervention ultimately led to the salvation of the Jewish people.
Esther's journey from orphan to queen reflects the transformative power of God's providence. Her rise to royalty was not a mere stroke of luck but a divine setup for a specific purpose. Esther's privilege wasn't for personal indulgence; it was a platform granted by God to fulfill a mission greater than herself. Her courage in the face of adversity and her willingness to use her influence for the benefit of others serve as an example of purposeful living. Esther's story teaches us that our positions of privilege, no matter how unexpected, can be vehicles for positive change and divine purpose when used with a selfless and courageous heart.
So, what privileges do you possess? Whether material or immaterial, ask God how what you have can be used for the betterment of others. Maybe you have connections or access to resources that others don’t; maybe you have a position of influence and favor; perhaps you have a wealth of knowledge or information that others do not. Whatever God has bestowed upon you, you are “blessed to be a blessing.” If God has brought you out of darkness into light, out of bondage into freedom, and from slavery into purpose, prayerfully consider how you can use your new life to bring Him glory and help others.

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship (Romans 12:1, ESV).”
